As a blogger, I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to create SEO optimized content especially in this tech-savvy era where millions of posts are getting published every day and ranking on the first page of the search engine result page (SERP) is difficult than ever.
But the good news is, a very small portion of bloggers around the globe writes the content which is SEO optimized.
Applying SEO techniques while writing your content will definitely take your blog to the next level.
Anyone who knows basic English can write content online but it takes special skills to write SEO optimized content.
So today in this blog post, I will be sharing tips and techniques to write SEO friendly articles which will definitely help in ranking better in search engines.
When we talk about bringing traffic on the website, Organic traffic we all should focus on as this is the best kind of traffic and have the highest potential to give you a loyal customer or reader for your blog.
It’s because they end up on your website due to the search query they entered in the search engine and then search engine crawls millions of web pages and show the results which are relevant to that particular searcher.
There are high chances, your website contains the information that the searcher is looking for. And when supply meets the demand, there are high chances something magical will happen.
So now let’s talk about the techniques we must use for creating SEO optimized content.
Many new SEO techniques would come and many old will be discarded but keyword research is kind of evergreen.
Before writing any post, we all should do basic keyword research.
It’s because no matter how awesome content you have created. If no one is interested in that particular topic then all your hard work has gone in vain.
So it’s always good to do a bit of keyword research before writing anything.
I personally use Google keyword planner as it is free and does the job quite well for me.
How to use Google keyword planner?
Once you are on the google keyword planner page.
Click on Discover new keywords
Type the keywords you want to research and then click Enter. You can research multiple keywords at a time.
Now click on Get results button.
You can see both the keywords have a fair amount of search volume and low competition. So you can target any of the keywords for content creation.
This was an example of keywords research, detailed keyword research will be a blog post in itself.
Always create a content outline by analyzing a few of the top-ranked results
Suppose you want to write about a topic but don’t know where to start. You have this basic outline in your mind but nothing more than that.
The fastest and best technique to come up with some great content idea is to search about the topic on google and open a few of the top-ranked websites.
Because there is a reason why they are on the top.
So go through their posts and create a basic outline in your mind or best is to write it down.
Then think about the content around the outline you have just created.
Please don’t plagiarize the content as Google is very strict about plagiarizing. You won’t get any ranking on google and google can even ban your website in a worst-case scenario.
I have read many articles by Neil Patel and almost, in every article, he emphasized writing long-form articles usually between 4000 – 8000 words.
If that is too much for you then start with 2000 words and gradually increase.
The reason being is, imagine you want to read about a topic and then you searched on google.
You find two blogs that have written about the same topic. one basically briefed you about the topic and the other wrote a detailed comprehensive blog post.
Which one will you prefer? Obviously, the second one right?
It’s always good to write long-detailed content so your readers don’t need to browse other blogs to know anything about that particular topic.
Use search engines wisely
When we think about a topic to write on our blog, we get so engrossed in keyword research that we don’t even notice search engines itself gives you so many content ideas for your blog, which is being searched on google and is related to the topic you are going to write.
Have you ever looked at People also ask on your search engine result page?
Unfortunately, very few people notice this and utilize this feature of search engines effectively.
And the best part is, once you click on a question. it gives you another set of questions.
Keeping doing this until you find enough topics to write on.
Addressing these questions will definitely improve search engine ranking as Google shows these questions because people are actually asking it on the search engines.
Include keywords in the post title
Always make this habit to include keywords while selecting a title for your blog post.
As we have discussed earlier, keywords are still one of the most important factors while determining your search engine ranking.
So it’s always good to include keywords in title, body, meta description, URL and image alt attribute.
This is will ensure when people search for that particular keyword in search engines, you get an upper hand as compared to those who haven’t used keywords properly in their post.
But don’t overuse the keywords in your post. This is called keyword stuffing. It is against the best SEO practices.
Add meta description with keywords
A meta description is a set of words that appear below your post title in search engines.
Having a great meta description increases the chances of the post getting clicked.
It is usually 155 – 160 characters long, anything more than that will be trimmed by Google.
Try to include your keywords in the meta description as well as it is one of the factors which search engines consider while ranking pages.
Always use relevant Image Alt Text
Search engines don’t read images on your website. It only read the alt text of your image.
And It is always a great SEO practice to use relevant and comprehensive alt text in your image.
And it’s the icing on the cake when you use keywords in your image alt text quite a few times.
But again don’t overuse it. Use only where it is making sense.
For instance, an image having an alt text IMG0003 is a bad SEO practice and will definitely hamper your website traffic to some extent.
But if an image is about meta description. and you wrote its alt text as a Meta Description example. Then you are following the best practices of SEO.
Interlink your old posts with a good anchor tag
If you will read about how search engines basically words, then you will get to know that, the first thing search engines do when you enter a search query is navigating to millions of web pages on the internet. This process is called crawling.
They crawl on a webpage then find a link and move to another webpage.
So it’s always better to interlink your relevant old posts in the current article so google crawl through all the web pages of your website and analyze, what your blog is all about?
This will help search engines to rank your website better when in the future someone will query the same thing or about the same topic.
This was from a search engine perspective.
When you interlink your old posts, users who end up landing on your blogpost get more articles to read about the topic they are interested in and that will eventually increase your on-page time and reduce the bounce rate of your website.
But make sure when you are interlinking the post, you are using a comprehensive and relevant anchor tag.
Suppose earlier you wrote a blog post about, How to increase your blog traffic?
And now you are writing content about SEO,
That will eventually increase blog traffic.
So select Blog Traffic and convert it in the link and use the URL of your previous post you want to interlink.
Don’t use alien words while interlinking the post.
For instance, If a blog post is about Keywords research and you are interlinking it with words related to google analytics.
Then it’s not the best practice.
Use heading tags properly
If you are using WordPress, then for the post title it uses the H1 tag by default.
If your post contains subheading then using the H2 tag will be great. If it has a further subheading then H3.
You got the idea right?
You have to use proper heading tags hierarchy.
H1 > H2 > H3 > H4 > H5 > H6
Include keywords in the permalink and remove stop words
You know which URL format is best for SEO,
It’s because it is easily comprehensible. By just looking at the URL anyone can tell you what this post is all about.
And there is one technique which I learned recently about permalink is, never use stop words in your URL.
For instance, the permalink example I just demonstrated has a stop word if you will look carefully.
I am talking about “to” in the URL.
There are several other stop words that a blogger must not use if they want to rank better on SERP.
few examples of stop words are:
You can search on google for the complete list.
Optimize the images
As they say, “A picture is worth a thousand words”
Including images, while writing your content makes your post more engaging and visually appealing.
Including the right kind of pictures which is relevant to the context in which you are writing is a very essential element of writing quality and SEO optimized blog content.
But do you know?
If images are not optimized properly on your website then it will drastically slow down your website loading speed.
And the search engine always gives priority to those websites which have the fastest loading time.
Not optimizing the images on your website will badly hurt your SEO goals.
So now the question is, how to do it?
The thing I like the most about WordPress is, you will find plugins for almost everything.
Image optimization is no exception. You will find tons of image optimization plugins on WordPress.
You can also optimize your image in some image editor and then upload it on your website.
Use LSI Keywords
LSI Keywords are the related words that search engines look for while scanning a web page.
And the basis of target keyword and LSI keywords, it understands the context of the page that eventually helps Google in serving the users better.
It always hurts when you write a long-form article or any form article on your blog and is desperately waiting for it to get noticed but that time never comes.
Your post gets a negligible view and then you get demotivated and eventually think I have had it all now. This is the worst part of being a blogger.
There are so many blogs out there filled with tons of content. It always takes a bit of research and strategy to get ahead of your competitors.
And writing SEO optimized content will ensure that your blog post gets the visibility it deserves.
It will rank you better in search ranking and trust me no traffic is better than high-quality organic traffic you get from search engines.
Apply these SEO techniques and you will surely get the reward for all the hard work and brainstorming you did while writing a post for your blog.
